Qingdao Metro Line 6's Integrated Space Design Wins French Design Award

Dec 15, 2025

Qingdao Daily/Guanhai News, December 15 - The integrated space design for the first phase of Qingdao Metro Line 6 has recently been honored with a French Design Award for the year 2025, praised for its outstanding creative expression and profound cultural connotations. To date, the project has garnered several major domestic and international awards, including The "Beyond Engineering" Award from the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA), a MUSE Design Award, and recognition for new achievements in the APEC Public Transport Science and Technology Innovation Competition. This latest prize from the French Design Awards marks the project's fourth international honor, further highlighting Qingdao Metro's achievements and strength in rail transit design.

The French Design Awards, founded in France by the International Awards Association (IAA), is one of the most influential awards in the global design field. It is dedicated to providing a broader platform for designers worldwide to convey their design concepts, showcase outstanding works, and lead global design innovation. The award's jury consists of world-renowned design experts and professors. In this year's competition, the integrated space design of Line 6's first phase stood out among numerous international entries.
Under the overall design theme of "Happy Times," the first phase of Line 6 fully draws on Qingdao's unique maritime culture and modern urban spirit. Through the artistic creation of "a unique scene for each station," public art is deeply integrated into the station spaces, vividly conveying the confident, serene, and content attitude of Qingdao's citizens. The design team employed a unified yet varied visual language, with a special focus on creating six feature art stations. By leveraging art installations and cultural symbols, the design not only serves as the finishing touch for the space's character but also endows each station with a unique identity and narrative, offering passengers a visual feast during their commute.
Furthermore, a key highlight of the award-winning design is its active response to China's "dual carbon" strategy. The first phase of Line 6 is the first in the entire network to make large-scale use of a fair-faced concrete design style. The design team boldly preserved the concrete's original texture and natural texture, allowing the structure itself to become the primary decorative element. The stark texture of the fair-faced concrete is paired with modern lighting and concise signage systems, creating a high-quality public transport space with a highly integrated and unified language. This fully embodies Qingdao Metro's exploratory achievements in the field of urban rail transit public art, shaping a futuristic and modern metro environment.
Moving forward, Qingdao Metro will continue to uphold its founding mission of "building a metro for the people and for the city." It aims to create innovative models that merge structural mechanics with architectural aesthetics, further promoting the deep integration of rail transit with a city's culture and the daily lives of its citizens.
