24 Solar Terms——Minor Cold

Jan 04, 2026Byiqingdao

Minor Cold is the twenty-third of the twenty-four solar terms, typically occurring between January 5th and 7th annually. It signifies the official start of the year's coldest period. Despite its name suggesting "minor" cold, in most parts of China, this period is often even colder than the subsequent Major Cold solar term, representing the peak of winter's severity. During Minor Cold, ancient agrarian society focused on protecting livestock and crops from the extreme freeze, while also actively preparing for the upcoming Lunar New Year festivities.

Historically, Minor Cold embodied people's resilience against the bitter cold and their wisdom in harmonizing life with nature's rhythms. The folk saying "nourish in Minor Cold, conserve in Major Cold" guided health practices, emphasizing the consumption of warming foods such as mutton hotpot, glutinous rice, and ginger tea to drive out the chill. Traditions like "walking through snow in search of blooming plums" also added warmth and cultural charm to the bleak winter days. These practices not only helped people endure the harsh season but also carried their hopes for health, prosperity, and the imminent arrival of spring.

Today, Minor Cold continues to serve as a vital marker in both the natural cycle and cultural consciousness. It reminds people to respect the laws of nature, adapt to seasonal changes through mindful daily routines and nourishing diets, and to find warmth and beauty within community and traditional culture, even amidst the depths of winter.
