24 Solar Terms——Grain Rain

Apr 19, 2026Byiqingdao

Grain Rain is the sixth solar term in the twenty-four solar cycle, usually occurring between April 19th and 21st annually. At this time, the sun reaches the celestial longitude of 30°, precipitation increases significantly, and newly planted rice seedlings and crops are in greatest need of rain, hence the name “Grain Rain.” It marks the deepening of late spring, as nature presents a scene of “rain nurturing a hundred grains.” In terms of phenology, Grain Rain exhibits vivid changes described as “duckweed begins to grow, turtledoves preen their feathers, and hoopoes alight on mulberry trees.” In traditional agrarian civilization, this solar term signals the final sprint of spring sowing, with rainfall directly affecting annual harvests. The farming proverb states, “Before and after Grain Rain, plant melons and sow beans,” emphasizing the close relationship between rain and agriculture.

Historically, Grain Rain carried abundant folk memories and cultural symbols. The widely known tradition of “Sacrificing to Cangjie during Grain Rain” is held annually in places like Baishui, Shaanxi, honoring the legendary inventor of Chinese characters. This ritual aligns with the ancient tale of “heaven rained millet, ghosts wept at night.” Relatedly, the custom of “Grain Rain talismans” involved pasting vermilion charms on walls to repel scorpions, centipedes, and other venomous creatures, reflecting ancient wisdom in hygiene and pest control. Additionally, “drinking Grain Rain tea” is an important seasonal custom in southern China; tea leaves picked on this day are believed to clear heat, sharpen vision, ward off evil, and improve circulation, giving rise to the saying, “Grain Rain tea is better than elixirs.” In the north, “eating Chinese toon shoots” is popular, with tender sprouts prized for their fragrance and taste, described as “tender as silk before the rain.” These customs blend nature worship, ancestral reverence, and health preservation into a cultural landscape of heaven-human resonance.
