24 Solar Terms——Frost's Descent

Oct 21, 2026Byiqingdao

Frost's Descent, or Shuangjiang, is the 18th solar term and the final chapter of autumn, beginning around October 23rd and concluding around November 7th, when the Sun reaches the celestial longitude of 210°. It marks the moment when autumn's chill hardens into something sharper: dew no longer merely cold, but crystallizing into frost upon the grass, and the world tilts decisively toward winter’s quiet. The days still hold a pale warmth at noon, but dawn arrives with a brittle whiteness underfoot, and the northern wind carries the dry scent of fallen leaves and turned earth.

Agriculturally, Shuangjiang is a season of urgent gathering and quiet preparation. In the north, the harvest is being swept up and put away; cabbages are readied for storage, and the last of the sweet potatoes are dug before the ground hardens. In the south, the “three autumns” bustle continues—late rice is cut, rapeseed and winter wheat are planted, and cotton is picked clean before the first frost can spoil it. Beyond the fields, Shuangjiang is a time for eating persimmons to ward off the cold, climbing hills to see the maples turn crimson, and drinking chrysanthemum wine while the last flowers of the year bloom defiantly against the fading light.
