Qingdao Pilot Station has successfully completed a special pilotage mission for the damaged large bulk carrier MV CAPE XL. Overcoming the vessel's compromised maneuverability, the station adopted an innovative segmented pilotage approach to safely guide the vessel to berth at Qingdao Port's Qianwan Port Area.
The MV CAPE XL, a Capesize bulk carrier of 181,000 deadweight tons, sustained collision damage in the Singapore Strait on May 20, rendering its port anchor inoperative and its starboard anchor restricted, with emergency towing capability at the bow lost. Entering port with a deep draft and bow-heavy trim, the vessel posed extreme maneuverability challenges due to significant inertia and extended stopping distances.
Facing a pilotage distance exceeding 50 nautical miles and high operational risks, Qingdao Pilot Station broke with conventional practice and designed a two-stage segmented pilotage plan. In the first stage, senior pilots boarded the vessel to verify its maneuvering capabilities and develop a detailed berthing strategy. In the second stage, the team executed the berthing plan with precision.
Throughout the operation, the pilotage team coordinated closely with tugs, maritime traffic control, port dispatch, and terminal operators, establishing a comprehensive safety network. Drawing on extensive experience and superior ship-handling skills, the team successfully guided the MV CAPE XL to a smooth and precise berthing.
This mission stands as a testament to Qingdao Pilot Station's professional capabilities and collaborative strength. The station will continue to enhance its expertise in high-difficulty pilotage operations, safeguarding port navigation safety and supporting Qingdao's development as an international shipping hub.
