Automotive Industry of Jimo District: From "Made in Qingdao" to "Supplying the Globe"

May 11, 2026

A media briefing on the high-quality development of Jimo District’s automotive industry was recently held at FAW-Volkswagen East China Base. As Qingdao’s core carrier for the automotive industry, Jimo has achieved leapfrog development of its auto sector from "Made in Qingdao" to "Supplying the Globe" through smart manufacturing upgrading, full industrial chain deployment and global market layout.

In 2025, Jimo’s annual complete vehicle output hit 450,000 units, with new energy vehicle output exceeding 103,500 units and industrial output value reaching 18.1 billion yuan. The proportion of new energy industry output value surpassed 20% for the first time, and a modern automotive industrial ecosystem is taking shape at a faster pace.

FAW Group’s first global power battery export project which is hosted at this base — the HEV battery pack production line — has officially gone into operation. Its products are supplied to manufacturing plants in Germany, the Czech Republic, Brazil and many other countries. Boasting four core technical strengths that substantially extend the driving range of hybrid vehicles, the production line delivers an annual capacity of 120,000 units, enabling independent, controllable development and global supply of core new energy components.

Leading enterprises serve as the core pillar of industrial clusters and global expansion. As a national-level smart factory, FAW-Volkswagen East China Base keeps setting new production records, and its newly launched A-Class SUV project will further expand production capacity. FAW Jiefang Qingdao Base focuses on commercial vehicles, covering a full range of models. Its new energy heavy-duty trucks rank first in market share across the industry and adapt to multi-scenario logistics transportation. In the first four months of 2025, the base maintained steady growth in complete vehicle output, while production of new energy light-duty trucks surged dramatically. As a core export base, its output accounts for 60% of FAW Jiefang’s total truck exports, with products sold to more than 100 countries and regions worldwide. Its premium heavy-duty trucks have successfully entered the North American market.

When going global has become the major question of the times for China’s automotive industry, Jimo encourages enterprises including FAW Jiefang and FAW-Volkswagen to march into overseas markets. Leveraging Qingdao’s port advantages and an increasingly complete international logistics system, batteries "Made in Jimo" have begun global supply, while heavy trucks "Made in Jimo" are already running across vast lands in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. From complete vehicle exports to global supply of core components, Jimo is deeply integrating into the global division of labor in the automotive industry and continuously elevating the international influence of Chinese brands.

Moving forward, Jimo will focus on introducing new vehicle models, tackling core technical challenges, expanding overseas markets and optimizing the business environment. It will steadily raise the output share of new energy vehicles and specialize in intelligent and connected vehicles as well as core auto components. Relying on port strengths, Jimo will drive two-way global exports of complete vehicles and core parts, further embed itself into the global automotive industrial division of labor, and strive to build a 100-billion-yuan automotive industrial cluster, enabling products "Made in Jimo" to keep running across the global market.
